A family stay in Udaipur near Lake Pichola

How families stay in Udaipur near Lake Pichola from quiet Sukher: how far the lake is, getting there, rooms, food and what children enjoy.

Updated By 4 min read

Udaipur is called the City of Lakes, and Lake Pichola, with the City Palace rising above its eastern shore, is the one most visitors come for. Hotel Rudra Kripa is in Sukher, on Udaipur’s quieter side, about 9.3 km by road from the ghats. We don’t overlook the water – from our rooftop you look out to the Aravalli hills – but families gain calm evenings, free parking and space to rest between outings.

Why choose Hotel Rudra Kripa for your family stay?

Traveling with children changes what matters in a hotel: a calm room, food everyone will eat, somewhere to cool off and a simple way to reach the sights. Here’s how we handle each.

How far is Lake Pichola?

Staying in Sukher means you are a short drive from Lake Pichola: about 9.3 km by road to Gangaur Ghat, around 25 min by car. If you’re looking for a hotel in Udaipur near the lake but would rather sleep away from the old city’s crowds, that drive is the trade-off – and each evening you come back to a quieter part of town, with the Aravalli hills on the skyline.

The sights around Lake Pichola

Gangaur Ghat, the City Palace and Jagdish Temple are a few minutes’ walk from one another, so a single drive into the old city covers a whole morning:

City Palace
The Maharanas’ palace complex above the lake’s eastern shore, with a museum, courtyards and views over the water.
Jagdish Temple
A 17th-century temple to Vishnu at the top of a steep flight of steps, known for its carvings.
Bagore Ki Haveli
An 18th-century haveli at Gangaur Ghat, now a museum, with an evening show of Rajasthani folk dance.
Boat rides on Lake Pichola
Boats leave from the City Palace side of the lake, and some stop at Jag Mandir, the island palace.

Planning the best stay in Udaipur near Lake Pichola with children

A few habits make lake days easier with children:

  • Go early. The ghats and the City Palace are calmer and cooler in the morning.
  • Rest through the midday heat. Head back for lunch and a break – a stay in Udaipur with a pool means a swim on the roof after sightseeing (ask us for the pool hours).
  • Take a boat in the late afternoon. The light softens, and the lake is at its prettiest around sunset.
  • Leave the car behind. The old city’s lanes are narrow and parking near the ghats is limited, so take an auto-rickshaw or a taxi in – parking at the hotel is free.
  • Pack for the heat. From April to June, afternoons are hot: carry water and hats.

More family outings

North of the old city, and a little nearer the hotel, three more places are worth a few hours:

Fateh Sagar Lake
Another of Udaipur’s lakes, with boat rides and evening walks along the Pal, its lakeside promenade.
Saheliyon Ki Bari
An 18th-century garden of fountains, lotus pools and marble pavilions – an easy outing with small children.
Shilpgram
A crafts village of traditional rural houses from western India, with artisans at work and folk performances.

Restaurants near Lake Pichola

Rooftop restaurants line the ghats around Gangaur Ghat and Ambrai Ghat, and many look straight out over the water – book a table for sunset if the view matters to you. Ambrai Ghat, on the west shore, has the classic view of the City Palace across the lake. Back at the hotel, the restaurant serves Rajasthani and continental dishes, and you can reserve a table by WhatsApp or phone.
