July to September

Monsoon in Udaipur

When the rains come, the hills around Sukher turn green and the clouds settle low on the Aravallis. These photographs and films were taken at the hotel, in the rain.

The season

Green hills, low cloud and a cooler city

The south-west monsoon usually reaches Udaipur in late June or early July and stays until September. After the dry months, the Aravalli hills around Sukher turn green, mist hangs on the ridges, and the city’s lakes fill again.

It is a fine season to watch the weather from the rooftop: the pool, the Roof Top Cafe and the arched terraces all face the hills. Between showers the lakes and gardens are at their freshest; our guide to five must-visit places is a good place to start.

Lakes refilled
The rains refill Fateh Sagar and Lake Pichola, and the city’s gardens come into leaf.
The Monsoon Palace
Sajjangarh, on a hilltop overlooking Fateh Sagar, was built in the 1880s to watch the monsoon clouds gather.
