Why stay in Udaipur with a pool on the roof

Sightseeing in Udaipur means a lot of steps – up to the City Palace, through temple gates, down to the ghats – and by mid-afternoon most travelers are ready to cool off. That’s when a swimming pool in Udaipur pays off, and when the pool is on your hotel’s roof, it comes with a view: the Aravalli hills that ring the city, sharp in the morning light and softer at dusk as the lights of Udaipur come on below them. You don’t need one of the luxury hotels in Udaipur to swim with the hills in view.

In the monsoon, roughly July to September, the hills turn green under low cloud – see Udaipur in the monsoon if you’re traveling then.

Where we are

Not every hotel in Udaipur city has a swimming pool, so if a swim matters to you, check before you book. Ours is in Sukher, Udaipur, north of the old city – on Udaipur’s quieter side and well connected by road. Here’s how far the best-known sights are by car:

City Palaceto the main gate, Badi Pol
9.2 kmabout 25 min by car
Gangaur Ghat, Lake Picholabeside Bagore Ki Haveli in the old city
9.3 kmabout 25 min by car
Fateh Sagar Laketo the Pal, the lakeside promenade by Moti Magri
7.9 kmabout 25 min by car
Saheliyon Ki Bari
6.4 kmabout 20 min by car

A heritage-inspired hotel with a pool

The hotel has two room categories – the Deluxe Room and the Super Deluxe Room – both with free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom. The design draws on Rajasthan’s heritage: cusped arches, hand-painted vermilion borders, mustard-gold textiles and, in the Super Deluxe Room, a dark-wood four-poster bed.

A day by the pool

Between sightseeing days

Take a swim, then stretch out on a lounger with a book and a cold drink while the afternoon slows down. It’s what a pool in Udaipur is for: a few unhurried hours before the next day’s sightseeing.

For families

A swim together is an easy way to end a morning of palaces and temples, with loungers close by for anyone who’d rather sit out. Before the children get in, ask the team about the pool hours and any rules for young swimmers.

For couples

If you’re looking for a hotel in Udaipur for couples, come up to the peaceful poolside at sunset: a table by the water, something cool to drink and the sun going down over the hills.

Exploring Udaipur from Sukher

A short drive to the sights

Udaipur’s best-known sights are a drive from the hotel, not a walk, so it pays to start early. Begin at the City Palace, with Jagdish Temple a short walk from its gate; keep an evening for the promenade at Fateh Sagar Lake; and fit in Saheliyon Ki Bari, the garden of fountains and lotus pools – at about 6.4 km, the nearest of them. Then come back for a swim.

Planning your days around the water? Read about family days at Lake Pichola, or how a boutique hotel in Udaipur near Lake Pichola compares with a calmer base like ours. Arriving by train? Getting here from Udaipur City railway station has the route – the station is about 10.8 km away, around 30 min by car.

Help from the team

Reception is open 24/7. Ask there for help with travel arrangements or restaurant recommendations, or order room service when you’d rather stay in.

Dining by the pool and on the roof

On-site restaurant

The hotel’s multi-cuisine restaurant serves traditional Rajasthani dishes alongside continental and international favorites in its indoor dining hall. Up on the roof, the Roof Top Cafe serves snacks and beverages from breakfast at sunrise to dinner under the stars, with panoramic views over Udaipur and the Aravalli hills.

Poolside dining

When you’re hungry, you don’t have to leave the water’s edge: poolside dining covers anything from a light snack to a full meal at a table beside the pool. For drinks after a swim, read about our cafe in Udaipur with a view.

Before you book

If a pool, a quieter base and free, secure parking matter more to you than a lakeside address, Sukher is worth a look. Still choosing an area? See where to stay in Udaipur.

A shared rooftop pool isn’t the same as a private one – if privacy matters most, look for a hotel in Udaipur with a private pool. And if you’re comparing hotels in Udaipur under 1,000 rupees, ask what’s included – a pool, breakfast, parking – before you compare prices.
