Best hotels to stay in Udaipur: choosing the right area

Where to stay in Udaipur, area by area – the old city by Lake Pichola, the Fateh Sagar side, near the station or quieter Sukher – and what to check before you book.

Updated By 5 min read

Udaipur, often called the City of Lakes, is a city of palaces, ghats and old lanes ringed by the Aravalli hills. Where you stay in Udaipur shapes your trip as much as the hotel you pick: in the old city you can walk to the sights, while further out you trade that for space, quiet and parking. There’s no single best place to stay in Udaipur, so here are the main areas, the kinds of stay on offer and what to check before you book – and, briefly, why guests choose Hotel Rudra Kripa.

Where to stay in Udaipur: the main areas

Most visitors choose between four parts of the city, each with its own pace.

The old city and Lake Pichola

If you want to stay in Udaipur city, by the water, this is the place. Havelis and small hotels crowd the eastern shore around Lal Ghat and Gangaur Ghat, and the western side around Hanuman Ghat and Ambrai Ghat. You can walk to the City Palace and Jagdish Temple, and rooftop restaurants look out over the lake. The trade-offs: the lanes are narrow and busy, many havelis have steep stairs, and parking is scarce, so a car may have to stop short of the door.

Want a hotel in Udaipur near the lake without the old city’s bustle? Our family guide shows how Lake Pichola days work from Sukher. For small, design-led hotels, see our guide to boutique hotels near Lake Pichola.

Fateh Sagar and Sukhadia Circle

North of the old city, the Fateh Sagar side is newer, greener and more spread out. Evenings here mean a boat ride, snacks from the stalls and a walk along the Pal, the lakeside promenade; Saheliyon Ki Bari and the fountains of Sukhadia Circle are close by. Roads are wider than in the old city, and autos and taxis make the run down to the City Palace easy.

Near the railway station and bus stand

Practical rather than pretty. Udaipur City station and the central bus stand at Udaipole lie just east of the old city, with plenty of simple hotels around them – handy for a night before an early train or bus. Arriving by train but staying further out? Read our guide to a hotel near Udaipur City railway station.

Quieter suburbs such as Sukher

On the north side of town, suburbs such as Sukher give you more space, quieter nights and easier parking, with the old city a drive away rather than a walk. Hotel Rudra Kripa is here: the City Palace is about 9.2 km by road, around 25 min by car, and our rooftop looks out to the Aravalli hills. It suits travelers with a car, families and anyone who sleeps better away from the crowds. More in our guide to hotels in Sukher.

Types of stay in Udaipur

Across those areas, you’ll find five broad kinds of stay:

Heritage havelis and kothis
Havelis are old townhouses built around courtyards, many now small hotels in the old city; a kothi stay means a grand old mansion or bungalow, often with a garden. Expect character – and sometimes steep stairs.
Palace hotels
Former royal palaces by Lake Pichola, including one on an island in the lake – a stay for a special occasion.
Boutique hotels
Smaller, design-led hotels with personal service, in the old city and beyond. Hotel Rudra Kripa is one, in Sukher.
Budget hotels and hostels
Hostels, with dorm beds and shared common areas, are mostly in the old city; budget hotels are spread across town. We’re a hotel rather than a hostel, so every room is private, with its own bathroom. For tips, read about a budget stay in Udaipur.
Tented camps
A tent stay in Udaipur usually means a camp in the countryside or hills outside the city – good for a night or two closer to nature.

How to choose the best hotel for your stay

Once you know the area, a few checks narrow the choice:

  • The drive to what you’ll see. Ask for distances rather than “near”: how many kilometers and minutes to the City Palace, the lake or the station?
  • Parking. If you’re driving, check that the hotel has parking – it’s scarce in the old city.
  • A pool. A hotel in Udaipur with a swimming pool is worth it from April to June, when afternoons are hot.
  • Breakfast. Check whether it’s included, and for which rooms.
  • Recent reviews. Read the latest reviews, not just the overall score.
  • Star ratings. Stars mostly reflect facilities, while reviews tell you about the stay – see how star ratings work for hotels in Udaipur.
  • The full price. If you’re after the lowest price for a hotel in Udaipur, compare the total with taxes and what’s included.
