Kumbhalgarh is a hill fort in the Aravalli hills, north of Udaipur in Rajsamand district. The drive is long enough that it needs a full day rather than a stop between other things.

How far is Kumbhalgarh from Udaipur?

Our figures are road distances to the ticket office at Ram Pol, not to the town or to a lodge nearby. From the City Palace it is about 97 km and around 2 hr 30 min by car. From Sukher, on the north side of the city, it is about 89 km and around 2 hr 15 min.

Published figures vary because sites measure from different starting points and to different ends: the town, the fort gate or a resort. The Rajasthan Tourism page for Rajsamand gives 84 km north of Udaipur without saying where it measures from.

For other distances, see the Udaipur distances page.

What is Kumbhalgarh Fort known for?

The fort is attributed to Rana Kumbha of Mewar in the 15th century, according to the Rajasthan Tourism page, which also names it as the birthplace of Maharana Pratap.

The fort is known for its wall. Wikipedia gives the perimeter walls as 36 km. It is a reported figure, not a surveyed one, so treat it as an approximation.

Is Kumbhalgarh a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Yes, as part of a group. Kumbhalgarh is one of six forts in the Hill Forts of Rajasthan listing, along with Chittorgarh, Ranthambore, Gagron, Amer and Jaisalmer. Wikipedia, citing UNESCO, gives the year as 2013 and the cultural criteria as (ii) and (iii).

UNESCO’s own site refused our requests, so we have not read the property page ourselves. The ASI Jodhpur Circle lists “Fort of Kumbhalgarh as a whole” among the monuments it protects.

Kumbhalgarh Fort ticket price

We found no official figure. The ASI pages we could open gave no fee for Kumbhalgarh, and the main ASI site had an expired security certificate when we tried it. What remains is third-party reporting, and it conflicts.

Fees may change

UNI, a news agency, reported that ASI published draft amendment rules on 8 September 2026 that place Chittorgarh and Kumbhalgarh forts in Category A of a revised schedule. It is a draft with objections open for 45 days, and final only once it is in the Gazette. The report we read gave no fee amounts. Ask at the counter before you count the cost.

Timings and the light and sound show

Hours are reported as 9:00 am to 6:00 pm by Capture a Trip and as 8:00 am to 6:00 pm by Trawell. Arriving early costs nothing if the 8:00 am figure is right, and the later one still leaves the day open.

The evening light and sound show is reported at about 6:45 pm by Capture a Trip, and at 6:00 to 7:00 pm by Trawell. Show prices are reported at ₹100–200 by one source and ₹40–100 by another, depending on weekday and weekend. These are third-party figures, so confirm the day’s schedule at the counter. A show that ends after dark means a return drive in the dark.

How long to allow

Allow a full day. The drive alone is around 2 hr 30 min each way from the City Palace by our conservative figure. Leave two to three hours for the fort itself if you want to walk up through the gateways to the palace buildings and along part of the wall. That is our estimate rather than a published one.

Combining Kumbhalgarh with Ranakpur

Ranakpur’s Jain temple ticket office is about 34 km from Kumbhalgarh’s ticket office, around 55 min by car. Published figures for this stretch vary widely, so check a live map before you commit to the loop.

Visitor hours at Ranakpur are reported by India Guide as 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm daily, with ₹100 for Indians and ₹600 for foreigners. Neither the temple’s own site nor the trust that manages it gave visitor timings, so check before you go. The afternoon window suggests Kumbhalgarh in the morning and Ranakpur after lunch.

That is a long day. Route and timings are worth checking in a live maps app, and it is reasonable to choose one of the two if you are travelling with children or do not want to drive after dark. For planning, see Udaipur day trips and the itinerary guide.
